It's Just "Plain Fun"!


The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher’s summer camp is in its fourth week, full of energetic kids who are eager to explore and have fun! Read more about their experiences!

Week Four, Day One

Jenna: I liked going to the salt marsh because I got to use a lot of different nets to catch crabs, fish, snails, and other animals. I wish I could do it again!

Hannah: My favorite part of today at camp is going to the salt marsh. Also I liked Wilson, the wood duck. I liked the salt marsh because we got to catch things. I like Wilson because he’s cute. It was wonderful.

Lexi: My favorite part of the day was going to the salt marsh because I got to catch crabs…but I didn’t. I loved it when Wilson the duck came to visit us. I learned that pin fish have sharp fins.

Yasmine: I liked going to the salt marsh and catching crabs (even though I never caught any). We used different nets to catch fish and a wood block with a fish attached to a string. I was soaking wet at the end.

Hudson: When you go to the salt marsh, you will learn to go crabbing and learn to use fishing equipment.

Mary Margaret: My favorite part of the day was when we went crabbing at the salt marsh. The reason I liked the salt marsh was because Jenna and I caught two fishies! But I also liked it when Wilson the wood duck came to our classroom.

Alana: My favorite thing was the salt marsh because I learned how to use a net.

Leah: My favorite thing of the day was when I went to the salt marsh. Even though I fell in the salt marsh, it turned out fun. I would agree to come next year. I had fun with Wilson the duck too. That is why I like that.

Jacob: Today we went to a salt marsh. We went crabbing for blue crabs and caught lots of cool fish. We used pole nets to catch the fish. I caught a pinfish and shrimp. That was my favorite thing we did today.

Maddie: Today we met Wilson the wood duck. He was so cool. He was very scared though, and shy. He was the best part of today because I have never been that close to a duck before.

Erin: My favorite part of the day was…Wilson. Wilson was my favorite because he was funny and he is a very playful duck.

Cammie: My favorite part of the day was the salt marsh because I got to play with the fishies. And I learned that the salt marsh was a nursery.

Tommy: My favorite part of the day was the salt marsh because we were in the water and it was plain fun.

Walt: Today at camp, we went to the salt marsh. I had fun at the salt marsh because I got to use a cast net.

Ben: I liked to go to the salt marsh. Because I almost caught a crab.

Alex: I enjoyed the salt marsh because I saw a school of fish. I also saw 2 shark teeth. 3 crab claws also.

Week Three, Day 4

Addison: What I learned today is that a baby alligator can call for its mama. Isn’t that cool?

Peyton: I learned that alligators call for their mom. And I learned that frogs are cold blooded.

CJ: I learned that alligators hiss for their mom when they’re scared.

Justin: I learned that today turtle’s shell is a bone and that they will die if they come out of their shell. Today was really fun!

Louis: I learned when an alligator hisses, it is calling its mom.

Hunter: What I learned today was to crawl like a green turtle.

Garrett: What I learned today is an alligator hisses to call their mom.

Owen: I learned that frogs and turtles are cold blooded. A baby alligators pees when scared.

Ashlyn: We learned about reptiles. My favorite was the alligator. When a baby alligator is scared his eyes bubble and he cries for their mom.

Week Three, Day 3

Ashlyn: I learned about invertebrates like sea stars, sea urchins, crabs and anemones. My favorite is sea starts. They are so cool. I just can’t wait ‘til tomorrow!

Hunter: I learned that it is hard for fish to survive in the rocky outcrop.

Bobby: Today I learned about invertebrates. I learned today octopus can change texture.

Garrett: I learned that univalves are sea snails with one shell instead of two.

Owen: I learned that it’s hard for a lot of fish to survive in the tide pool and saw a lot of life in the tide pool.

Peyton: Today I learned about inverts and what they eat and where they live. When we were at the rocky outcrop, I saw a lot of inverts.

Justin: I learned that fish and other animals can’t survive if they are out of their habitat. I also learned that the channel whelk gets its name from the “swirl”.

Louis: What I learned today is that invertebrates have no bones.

CJ: I learned that there are tiny hermit crabs.

Week Three, Day 2


Owen: I liked the little puffer fish we caught canoeing. Canoeing was hard on the way over. The way back, I paddled hard the whole time.

Tyler: What I liked best about canoeing was the fact that you could drive the boat even if you didn’t have a license. Animal was a baby stone crab that I named Kingler. He was a boy. I think crabs are cool. Can’t wait until tomorrow!

Addie: I loved everything about canoeing. It was so much fun. I loved catching the crabs.

Hunter: My favorite thing when we were canoeing was when we caught the puffer fish.

Peyton: What I liked about canoeing was that I was in Ms. Stephanie’s group. I saw a baby flounder when we got to Zeke’s Island.

Louis: My favorite part was when I caught a pipefish.

Garrett: My favorite thing I caught was the grass shrimp I caught.

Justin: I was the first one to row the canoe down to the island and it was fun. My favorite animal was the baby pufferfish.

Bobby: My favorite part of the canoe trip was when I caught a pufferfish.

Carter: My favorite part of canoeing was when I caught the giant crab.

Week Three, Day 1

Addie: My favorite part of the day was when we got to meet the duck because the duck was funny. One reason was that it had an “accident”.

Justin: My favorite part of the day was when we went to the marsh because we go to touch crabs. I was an ornithologist because I looked through binoculars and looked at birds eating.

Bobby: My favorite part of the day was when we were looking at the stingray.

Hunter: My favorite part of the day was looking at the birds. I was an ornithologist.

Garrett: My favorite part of the day was crabbing because I almost caught a crab.

Tyler: My favorite part of the day was going to the salt marsh. We got to go in the marsh and see crabs and even touch one. We saw snails and baby crabs. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring.

Owen: My favorite thing I did today was I watched the turtles in the lake. I saw the smallest turtle but did not see the alligator. I am looking forward to tomorrow.

Carter: The games because they were fun. The bird game specifically. The most fun part was guarding the eggs (golf balls).

Louis: My favorite part of the day was when we caught crabs.
